A first blog; a first post. The internet has become a forum of news, thoughts, opinions, dialogue, conversation, anger, revolution, movement, racism, drama, hate, love. We are all privy to it, drawn to it, in awe of it. We allow the world to shape us – discovering our true selves, but also losing sight of what is important. Family, faith and religion, friends, strangers, home. “Who are you?” we are told to ask ourselves, but it stumps us every time. We know where we come from, and that leads us to our next discovery, and the one after that.
I am Palestinian. I am proud of my culture, my heritage, my people. When they suffer, I feel the pain, I suffer too. When you aren’t proud of where you have come from, there is no way to move forward; to uncover the next part of who you truly are. I hate the hate and love the love that surrounds me.
To kick off this blog, here is a favorite from a favourite, Mahmoud Darwish:
I Come From There
By: Mahmoud Darwish
I come from there and I have memories
Born as mortals are, I have a mother
And a house with many windows,
I have brothers, friends,
And a prison cell with a cold window.
Mine is the wave, snatched by sea-gulls,
I have my own view,
And an extra blade of grass.
Mine is the moon at the far edge of the words,
And the bounty of birds,
And the immortal olive tree.
I walked this land before the swords
Turned its living body into a laden table.
I come from there. I render the sky unto her mother.
And I weep to make myself known
To a returning cloud.
I learnt all the words worthy of the court of blood
So that I could break the rule.
I learnt all the words and broke them up
To make a single word: Homeland…..
This blog is my open forum. My own ideas to be exchanged, shared, debated and discussed with others. I will post forms of art, news clips and articles, and personal commentary on Palestine, the Middle East, Israeli apartheid, the occupation and Arab culture. Please feel free to contact me, to share your thoughts and to engage in this wonderful, frightening and intellectual journey with me.
Welcome to my blog.
